Shag was born in Charleston, South Carolina on November 17, 1925.  He attended college at The Citadel.  His wife is Lola and his children are Wade and Kevin.  Shag can be contacted at 609 Country Club Avenue, Ft.             Shag Shahid came into the industry when the late, great, Lew Childre was still alive.  Shag still remains with the Childre Company as public relations director.  Over the years, Shag has been responsible for helping with the development of several innovative features for bait casting rods and reels.  He designed the pistol grip handle found on most casting rods today.  He was also instrumental in the development of the V-Spool feature for the Speed Spool Reels.  This innovative idea made reels lighter and easier to cat and helped cut down on backlash problems.  Shag is also a great seminar speaker and teacher.  His methods of casting are copied by many.  He is also one of the great “trick shot” casters in the industry.  Shag can entertain while he educates in the art of bait casting.  He is also on the staff of the American Fishing Institute.

In addition to being one of the great casters of all time, Shag is also one of the greatest showmen in the fishing tackle industry.  Crowds delight at his humor and style.  He is a real credit to the fishing tackle industry.

          In the late 80’s Lew Childre was bought out by Browning Arms & Fishing.  Also Shag was hired for research and development for their fishing product line.  Browning also had Shag to endorse their top line of casting rods with his name on them.  Shag was still very much involved with other products, field testing and doing seminars at all the fishing expositions throughout the country.  In the 90’s Browning was retained by ZEBCO Quantum.  Shag moved to the new company to help make even a better reel and rod.  Shag Shahid still influences the fishing market.  Shag still fishes tournaments with his long time dear friends.  Shag also has Shag Shahid’s Pro Fishing Team where he keeps tabs on three Pro Boats for product testing.  His main teams fish FLW and Bass Events.  After all the fun is over and the test results are in Shag Shahid’s hands, he will sign off on the fishing products.

  Shag’s Tips for Better Success 

1.      Make sure your tackle fits you.  Rods and reels should be balanced for best success.  Make sure your reel is suited for the rod you are using and that your line size does not exceed that reel’s capabilities.

2.      Reading the water can help you increase your catch.  Study maps prior to going on the water.  Use your sonar equipment to study bottom contour and structure.  Top pros will tell you it’s a big key to their success.

3.      Most people have a tendency to throw too hard when casting.  You will control your cast much better if you develop a smooth, easy motion.
